The minister:

I am delighted to welcome you all here today, to the sacred naming ceremony of Joshua.
To remind him, Jenny, Mark and Steven that they are part of a circle of family and friends who are committed to loving them through all of their lives and that everyone here is united by the ever loving presence of god.

Jenny will start the ceremony with a passage from kahil gibran:

"And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, speak to us of children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and he bends you with his might that his arrows may go swift and far.Let the bending in the archers hand be for gladness.
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so he loves also the bow that is stable."

I now ask Barbara (Grandmother) to come forward and light a candle on behalf of Joshua's grandparents, his grandmother in spain and his two grandfathers who are his own special guardian angels.

Joshua This candle carries the light and love of all of your ancestors, that you may constantly know their love and protection now and always.

Steven will now come forward and light a candle as Joshua's brother and spiritual elder.

Joshua this candle carries the light and love of yours and Steven's eternal brotherhood, Steven's love and protection will be with you now and always.

Mark will now give each of the godparents a crystal that has been cleansed and dedicated ready for today’s ceremony. I ask each of you to hold the crystal for a minute in silence and pour into all your loving wishes for Joshua as his chosen spiritual guardians.

I would now ask each of you to come forward in turn to put your crystal in the bowl and say out loud to Joshua what your wishes are for him.

The naming

The oil in this bowl is to be blessed with the sacred divinity of God's love. As it is passed around this group I would ask each of you to silently pour your love and grace into it.

Beloved divine spirit we ask for your love to infuse this oil for the naming of this beautiful boy.

Oil put on Joshua's forehead: we bless you Joshua James Robinson, son of Mark and Jenny, with our love and the love of our divine universe.

With joy in our hearts we name this child, Joshua James Robinson, in the presence of god and the generations before you we welcome you into this family and the world. We are delighted that you are here and we make way for the beautiful gifts your presence here will surely bring. May you always know that you are loved in our eyes and in the eyes of your divine creator.

We wish you all the love peace and happiness that is your inheritance.

Prayer by Jenny and Mark

Thank you beloved god for this beautiful soul that you have entrusted into our care.
We ask that we always seek your guidance to show him the path of truth and light.
That he may walk though life with beauty before him, truth at his side and integrity and honour behind him.

May we always feel as grateful and honoured as we do today for his presence in our lives and may he always know our unconditional love and acceptance whether he is walking in the shadows or dancing in the light.

Thank you god for loving and watching over him with us.

The closing remarks

Jenny and Mark go forward from this day forward with a clear vision of the beautiful family life you wish to create. Know that this whole family is blessed by these people present, seen and unseen, and by the everlasting love of god.
